About Michael S Shillingford

I have dedicated my career to caring for children with congenital and complex heart conditions. I am honored to work alongside a team committed to delivering compassionate, leading-edge care.

I completed my undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, followed by training in general surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), critical care and cardiac physiology. I later pursued fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery at UF and congenital cardiothoracic surgery at Stanford University, where I also served as a clinical instructor in pediatric cardiac surgery. In 2020, I earned my MBA from UF to further enhance my leadership in health care.

Since 2011, I’ve held leadership roles in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, including serving as director of Surgical and CVICU Morbidity & Mortality conferences, director of the tandem cardiovascular extracorporeal support service and member of the Wolfson Children’s Hospital Development Council.

Throughout my career, I’ve been deeply involved in clinical research and have authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications on congenital heart surgery, pediatric ECMO and sudden cardiac death. I am board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. I am fluent in both English and Spanish.

Outside of the operating room, I enjoy teaching, mentoring and continuing to explore innovative strategies to improve heart care for children around the world.
